Welcome to the Ideas for Gifted Children site. Do you have an idea you'd like to see for an online resource for you or your gifted child? Something that you'd find helpful?

The idea is that we'd like to know what resources you'd like to see that aren't already available. This would be something different than Hoagies, Davidson's, etc. Or maybe an improvement on something that you already use. Be creative! We'd like to hear from you!

    Online database of education resources

Create an online database of education resources including books, websites (like PBS, BBC, etc) that parents may find helpful. There has to be some sort of social networking/rating feature of this so that it's not stale. And it needs to be organized by interest. Otherwise it'd just be a duplicati... more

How to find other gifted kids my sons age to play with

Love a resource with info on gifted playgroups. It's hard to know how to get my 5-year old with other like-minded kids.

A free, credentialed, national online educational curriculum

Every child in america should have the option of opting out of their local school, and using a free, accredited online substitute. The software should be intelligent enough to vary it's speed to match the pace of the learners. Any child who gets credit for '3rd grade Math' for example, would h... more

A list of legal resources for advocacy

Case law and legislation pertaining to gifted education.

That could certainly be included as a category in a database of resources. Good idea.

    parenting classes

I'm feeling like I could stand to take another parenting class (or two). One that specifically addresses gifted children, or an aspect of raising gifted children, might be good. I like the idea of SENG's webinars and plan to take advantage of those, but what about a webex (or other type) that i... more

Idea for screening for kids who need Gifted interventions.

While reading Outliers, there was discussion of school that do achievement testing in both the spring and fall. Apparently some children make huge gains in their learning over the summer. Seems to me that this is a clear indication that garden variety school is 'slowing down their learning' an... more

career counseling website for gifted children

I would love to see some kind of website that can provide the gifted children with career counseling. It can be a questionairre with multiple choices or a straight Q & A format. Ideally, it would also suggest colleges that match the child's profile and interests.

An ABC guide for parents who think their child is gifted.

A powerpoint or outline of steps they can follow; requesting their school test the child, seeking local organizations that provide enrichment opportunities, joining PAGE, seeking a local PAGE group, and links to other resources.

We could probably put something together that would be PA specific. (Wonder if Hoagies has a checklist already...?)

A community of bloggers about children's learning

I've looked for blogs in which people describe their (anonymised!) gifted children's learning, what they're doing, what resources are useful, what challenges they are facing at home or at school. There must be some, but they are not easy to find: e.g., people using blogspot don't put "gifted... more

Accredited area High school science courses offered

Certain summer programs require science prerequisites that are hard to achieve while in middle school. An example is high school biology since that labs are not available even if the course material could be addressed. Would love a Pittsburgh location during the summer to take a class that wasn... more

A national political movement to support needs of gifted

We need to demand that schools that recieve government money to train teachers have extensive classes on the alternative develoment of gifted learners, and how to create supportive classrooms.

An organization for lending out educational resources

One idea that I am considering is creating a new non-profit organization. The initial premise would be to get donated laptops. Then, we'd lend out these laptops to educational programs that may need them. For example, C-MITES fall/summer workshops and summer camps. We could then look at extending... more

Locall-organized tours to see how things are made

It would satisfy the curiosity of all gifted children if they had access to workplaces or organizations where they could watch products being assembled or manufactured. Not only could this guide career choices and interests, but it would spark creativity and make the link between creativity and p... more
